It was the perfect introduction to the island and helped us understand and appreciate the Azores from day one. We were incredibly lucky because there were only four participants that evening – just our family and our guide, Ivo. From the moment he picked us up at our hotel, the experience felt more like spending time with a knowledgeable local friend than joining an organized tour. During the drive, he constantly pointed out interesting places, explained local history, culture, geology, and everyday life on the islands, and happily answered all our questions. On the way to Furnas, he stopped at beautiful viewpoints, including the famous view over Vila Franca do Campo. Once in Furnas, he introduced us to the fascinating geothermal landscape, explaining the fumaroles, hot springs, volcanic activity, and even how the warm ground is used to cook the traditional Cozido das Furnas. What impressed us most was that he did not simply repeat facts – he shared stories and local perspectives that made everything much more interesting and memorable. Dinner was another highlight. The Cozido was delicious and the portions were enormous. Instead of disappearing while we ate, Ivo sat with us, and we spent the evening talking about life in the Azores, local traditions, education, tourism, and island culture. Those conversations gave us insights we would never have gained from a guidebook. After dinner, we visited the Dona Beija thermal baths. Experiencing the hot springs after dark was absolutely magical. The warm water, the steam rising into the night air, and the peaceful atmosphere made it one of the most memorable moments of our holiday. During the rest of our stay on São Miguel, Ivo continued to help us with recommendations for places to visit and restaurants to try. Later, when we traveled to Terceira, he again shared suggestions and local tips. Throughout the Western tour, he safely drove us to each destination, took the best pictures at vantage points, and advocated for our group especially during the lunch buffet which had a lot of options. The dessert was delicious that varies from day to day. We had the flan and rice pudding. For those worried about bathroom use, public bathrooms were available throughout. The van promptly picked us up/dropped off from Hotel Verde Mar in Ribeira Grande. I highly recommend this tour because the locations can be very busy and made the vacation less stressful. We had our own car, but it made the beautiful views of the Azores more enjoyable. You get a chance to explore each area from 15-45 min. Feel free to pack for the beach/pools. I did a quick dip into the pools and just walked around the beach. We would try other tours if our time allowed. The fees are worth the experience. All 5 of our senses were engaged during the tour: we saw beautiful places, smelt the sulfur from the fumaroles, tasted the wonderful stew and fountain water with medicinal properties, heard the history behind the region and touched the hot ground and walls around the fumaroles. The hot springs at Dona Beija were fantastic and incredibly relaxing for both body and mind. They have security on site which added to the feeling of safety. Lastly, we ended the night with eating a home made bean pastry Ivo brought. We stopped at Vila Franco do Campo to view the island offshore. Ivo came prepared with umbrellas so we could walk to the shore filled with black lava rocks. We then checked out the intriguing caldeiras before heading to a restaurant to sample the stew. There was tons of food! The we enjoyed the hot springs called Poça da Dona Beija. Very beautiful at night! Lastly, we took a nice walk around additional caldeiras and sampled some natural waters from the area. Ivo was great!
