Our itinerary for you:

1. Pickup + Quick Photo Stop – Vila Franca do Campo Islet (1h00m)

We’ll start by picking you up at your accommodation (or meeting point), where we’ll give you a warm welcome and a brief orientation. On the way to Furnas, we’ll make a short stop to enjoy the beautiful coastline of Vila Franca and take photos of the islet of Vila Franca do Campo (Princess Ring).

2. Fumarole field at Lagoa das Furnas – Sight Stop (30m)

The “Lagoa das Furnas,” naturally nestled within a caldera (an inactive volcano), stands out as a major attraction for tourists, hikers, biologists, and birdwatchers, thanks to its diversity of endemic and exotic species of flora and fauna that roam freely throughout the area (and are not dangerous).

As an area so rich in geothermal activity, the locals have devised a unique way to harness it to cook a distinctive Portuguese dish: the “Cozido das Furnas,” a mixture of meats, vegetables, and root vegetables that are slowly cooked underground for about 6 hours;

3. Dinner at a local restaurant – The traditional “Cozido das Furnas” (1h30m)

As part of the culinary experience on this tour, we’ll sample the famous stew cooked using geothermal heat—mentioned earlier—at a traditional local restaurant, as part of a full-course meal: appetizer, main course, and dessert, plus hot and cold beverages (vegetarian options and children’s meals are available).

Beware! This restaurant is known for its generous portions, so be sure to come hungry!

4. Alameda Garden – Curiosity walk (15m)

After dinner, take a short stroll through the Alameda Garden (if you have time): a small, lush garden with a wide variety of plants, an artificial waterfall, and a small thermal pool—a sacred place for the locals. Take a look at the fish that live in our lagoons in the aquarium.

5. Furnas Hot Springs – “Poça da Dona Beija” (1h30m)

Immerse yourself body and soul in the thermal pools of Furnas, at “Poça da Dona Beija,” one of the most popular thermal facilities in Furnas, on São Miguel.

With natural waters at a temperature of around 39°C (102°F), surrounded by a setting of splendid vegetation and enriched by birdsong, this is a moment of relaxation and contemplation that will take you away from your daily routine and worries during the golden hour of the day, between twilight and nightfall.

These iron-rich waters are known as an excellent treatment for the skin, but are not suitable for dyed hair. Avoid the waiting lines—we’ll handle the reservation for you. Certain medical conditions may be incompatible with the thermal baths; please consult your doctor beforehand.

6. Fumarole Field of Furnas Village – Interpretive Walk (30m)

Let’s wrap up our tour by admiring the impressive fumaroles and “caldeiras” in the center of town at night: a spectacle of smoke and lights created by nature awaits you—a unique experience in the Azores. We’ll add a special touch to this stop with ancient tales and legends from the region.

Taste the rich mineral waters from the springs, and to cleanse your palate, we’ll sample a local homemade sweet treat, a delicacy of the Azores.

7. Ribeira Grande Drive + Drop-off (45m)

We’ll drive back along the north side of the island in a safe and relaxed atmosphere. During this 45-minute drive, you can take a nap and/or get recommendations on other places to visit and things to do for the rest of your stay. We’ll pass by the tea plantations, which will be closed at that time.

PICKUP INSTRUCTIONS

We’ll pick you up at your accommodation or meet you at a designated meeting point between 5:30 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.; we’ll return to the same location between 11:30 p.m. – 11:45 p.m. Please be ready by 5:30 p.m. so we can avoid any delays.

Pickup and drop-off services at accommodations in Ponta Delgada and Lagoa are included.

For pickups at accommodations in Ribeira Grande, we will charge an additional fee of €10 (per reservation, NOT per person) at the end of the tour, payable in cash. This fee is due to the extra mileage and additional work time required to ensure that activities take place on schedule. We appreciate your understanding.

If you’d prefer to avoid this fee, we can meet at the “Statue of the Emigrant” or the “City Gates” in Ponta Delgada, or near the “Continente” supermarket in Lagoa. We’ll confirm your chosen meeting spot with you after you make your reservation.

Keep in mind that after enjoying these hot springs, you’ll feel very relaxed and sleepy.

What are the characteristics of the thermal waters at Furnas?

The mineral-rich thermal waters that feed these thermal pools are very rich in iron, silica, sodium bicarbonate, sulfur, and other minerals. This mineral richness provides an excellent natural treatment for the skin, offers an extraordinary sense of relaxation, and stimulates blood circulation.

On the other hand, staying submerged in hot water for an extended period can cause hypotension and bradycardia, so it is not recommended for everyone. People with circulatory problems should not take thermal baths (swelling in the legs, varicose veins, and similar conditions). The thermal facilities also do not recommend it for infants and pregnant women.

If in doubt, consult your doctor first.

What other precautions should we take with these hot springs?

Because these waters are so rich in certain minerals, they can stain light-colored fabrics, turning them orange.

If you have dyed hair, especially in light shades, your hair may turn orange or greenish when you submerge it in the water.

Metal jewelry may change color irreversibly; we recommend that you remove it before bathing.

These waters come from a natural source and are not subjected to any type of treatment or filtration. DO NOT open your eyes underwater or swallow any of this water.

How much can the temperature vary in São Miguel?

The climate of the Azores is classified as temperate Atlantic or subtropical in certain areas, characterized by a small daily temperature range (which fluctuates between approximately 4 °C and 30 °C [39 °F and 86 °F] throughout the year), abundant rainfall, high relative humidity, and persistent winds.
Between October and April, we recommend bringing one or two warmer, waterproof items of clothing.
From May to September, we recommend light, breathable clothing; temperatures don’t get very high in the Azores, but the humidity is noticeable. At night, temperatures can drop significantly, even during the summer; bring a warm item of clothing, just in case.

What kind of clothes should I bring for the tour?

It is essential to wear comfortable shoes; high heels may look good in photos, but you’ll likely miss out on some of the fun when walking in areas off the beaten path, or you’ll be more prone to injury. You can expect to encounter uneven terrain during our walks.

Lightweight, breathable clothing for summer; waterproof and warmer clothing for winter. For the evening, just bring one warmer item of clothing.
We bring umbrellas if necessary.

What should I bring for water activities?

Please bring a swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen, and flip-flops.
Be careful when walking on the rocks, especially the shiny green ones, as they can be quite slippery.

Are there any dangerous wild animals on São Miguel?

The wildlife in the São Miguel region is quite harmless: you won’t encounter snakes, poisonous spiders, coyotes, foxes, wolves, bears, or any other type of predatory species.

The main concern usually arises in the ocean, with jellyfish, or when you get too close to certain bird nests.

Does the tour involve a lot of walking?
