What to do at Furnas, Azores at Night?

The majority of tourists visit Furnas during the day and never get to know the magical Valley of Furnas. After nightfall the area transforms itself: reflections from the old lights make the fumaroles steam glow on the dark background, hot springs become astonishing in their shadows and the empty roads make it feel like your presence is welcomed. What stands out at night:

  1. Soak your body and soul in Poça da Dona Beija hot springs at night

One of the most popular thermal facilities at Furnas, the only one open to the public at night. Mineral-rich waters fill up four different thermal pools all fed from the same hot springs, at temperatures ranging from 37ºC to 39ºC (99ºF – 102ºF), surrounded by an exotic mix of vegetation.

  2. Walk around Furnas Fumaroles and Caldeiras

Every one who visits the center of the village of Furnas eventually finds their fumaroles and caldeiras, where the locals have adapted to living around them. In the day it’s impressive, but at night is when one can truly enjoy and take the time to absorb these unique events, an otherworldly experience.

  3. Have the Cozido das Furnas for dinner

The most popular gastronomical experience at São Miguel, slowly cooked underground with the geo-thermal heat, for 5 to 6 hours. A tasty and tender meal made of locally sourced ingredients. For lunch you’ll have to deal with waiting queues and very busy noisy restaurant rooms. The servings are quite abundant.

  4. Fumarolic Field of Lagoa das Furnas without crowds

Furnas is one of the main attractions on the island for visitor, during the morning and afternoon bus tours, van tours, rental cars and taxis all fill up the entire village and surrounding lagoon with hundreds of people.

We went on two tours with him here, and it was sooo good. Ivo does such a great job. He doesn't just show you the best spots; he makes sure you really get to know the island. You can really tell how much heart he puts into the tours and how much he loves the island. I’d recommend a tour with him to anyone—it was an incredible experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Best Guided Tour We’ve Ever Experienced! Our Furnas by Nightfall – Mystic Tour with dinner was, without a doubt, one of the highlights of our entire trip to the Azores. In fact, I can honestly say this was the best guided tour we have ever experienced! From beginning to end, the evening was absolutely beautiful. Seeing Furnas as the sun went down and then experiencing the volcanic steam, warm lights, and mystical atmosphere after dark was something truly unforgettable. There is something incredibly magical about Furnas at night that photographs simply cannot capture. And then there was Ivo. He was absolutely amazing! He is incredibly knowledgeable about São Miguel — its volcanic activity, history, culture, nature and traditions — and he shared so much information throughout the evening in a way that was fascinating and never felt like a typical tour. You could tell how passionate he is about his island and how much he genuinely loves sharing it with visitors. The dinner was another highlight. Experiencing the traditional Cozido das Furnas, cooked underground using the natural volcanic heat, was such a unique Azorean experience. The food was delicious, hearty and comforting, and learning about how it is prepared made the meal even more special. But what really touched us were the personal touches. At the end of the evening, Ivo surprised us with a homemade treat made by his mother. It was such a thoughtful and heartfelt gesture, and honestly, it made the experience feel so much more personal. That little treat is something we will remember for a long time. ❤️ Our accommodation was outside the city, and because it was quite late by the time the tour ended, Ivo went above and beyond to make sure we got home safely. That meant so much to us. He wasn’t simply our guide for the evening — he genuinely cared about our experience and our safety right until the very end. Every part of the evening felt perfectly planned without ever feeling rushed. The scenery, the stories, the volcanic landscape, the thermal waters, the dinner, the atmosphere and the little unexpected touches all came together to create a truly perfect evening. The money we paid was worth every single penny. If you are considering booking this tour, don’t hesitate — BOOK IT! You will experience Furnas in a completely different way, and having Ivo as your guide makes it even more special. Thank you, Ivo, for an unforgettable evening and for sharing your beautiful island with us. We will remember this night for a very long time. ❤️🇵🇹 Absolutely 5 stars — and if we could give more, we would!

An unforgettable and perfect tour with Ivo! 🥇We did the "Majestic North: Fogo, Waterfalls And Tea" tour, and it was an absolutely fantastic and flawlessly executed experience. Our guide and driver, Ivo, was amazing throughout the entire day. He made sure we never felt rushed, giving us plenty of time to enjoy and truly experience every single stop. Ivo provided lots of great information about the sights, and we loved learning about daily life and what it is like to live in the Azores. We give this tour our very highest recommendations and a well-deserved gold medal!

Frequently Asked Questions — furnas Hot Springs Night Tour, Azores

If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, please don’t hesitate to contact us! We’d be happy to help.

How much can the temperature vary in São Miguel?

The climate of the Azores is classified as temperate Atlantic or subtropical in certain areas, characterized by a small daily temperature range (which fluctuates between approximately 4 °C and 30 °C [39 °F and 86 °F] throughout the year), abundant rainfall, high relative humidity, and persistent winds.

BetweenOctober and April, we recommend bringing one or two warmer, waterproof items of clothing.

From May to September, we recommend light, breathable clothing; temperatures don’t get very high in the Azores, but the humidity is noticeable. At night, temperatures can drop significantly, even during the summer; bring a warm item of clothing, just in case.

Precautions For Thermal Baths

What other precautions should we take with these hot springs?

Because these waters are so rich in certain minerals, they can stain light-colored fabrics, turning them orange.

If you have dyed hair, especially in light shades, your hair may turn orange or green if you submerge it in the water.

Metal jewelry may change color irreversibly; we recommend that you remove it before bathing.

These waters come from a natural source and are not subjected to any type of treatment or filtration. DO NOT open your eyes underwater or swallow any of this water.

If you have open wounds, avoid submerging them in the water

What are the characteristics of the thermal waters at Furnas?

The mineral-rich thermal waters that feed these thermal pools are very rich in iron, silica, sodium bicarbonate, sulfur, potassium and magnesium. This mineral richness provides an excellent natural treatment for the skin, offers an extraordinary sense of relaxation, and stimulates blood circulation.

On the other hand, staying submerged in hot water for an extended period can cause hypotension and bradycardia, so it is not recommended for everyone.
People with circulatory problems should not take thermal baths (swelling in the legs, varicose veins, and similar conditions). The thermal facilities also do not recommend it for infants and pregnant women.

If in doubt, consult your doctor first.

Clothing & What to Bring

What kind of clothes should I bring for the tour?

It is essential to wear comfortable shoes; high heels may look good in photos, but you’ll likely miss out on some of the fun when walking in areas off the beaten path, or you’ll be more prone to injury. You can expect to encounter uneven terrain during our walks.

Lightweight, breathable clothing for summer; waterproof and warmer clothing for winter. For the evening, just bring one warmer item of clothing.
We bring umbrellas if necessary.

What should I bring for water activities?

Please bring a swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen, and flip-flops.
Be careful when walking on the rocks, especially the shiny green ones, as they can be quite slippery.

Are there any dangerous wild animals on São Miguel?

The wildlife at land in São Miguel island is non-predatory: you won’t encounter snakes, poisonous spiders, coyotes, foxes, wolves, bears, or any other type of predatory species.

The main concern usually arises in the ocean, with jellyfish, or when you get too close to certain bird nests.

Is there a Furnas hot springs tour from Ponta Delgada with pickup included?

The Mystic Tour includes at your door pickup from your accommodation or meeting points in Ponta Delgada and Lagoa: no taxi, no rental car, no figuring out where to park in Furnas at night.
We collect you around 17:30 (5:30pm), you sit back for the 45-minute drive through the south coast and we drop you back by 23:30.
It’s the most relaxed way to experience Furnas hot springs from Ponta Delgada, and the most complete: dinner, hot springs and the fumaroles by night – all included in an evening.
