Our itinerary for you:

1. Pickup + Quick Photo Stop – Vila Franca do Campo Islet (1h00m)

We’ll start our mystic tour by sightseeing some of the beautiful coastline landscapes and the islet of Vila Franca do Campo while we drive towards Furnas.

2. Sight Stop – Furnas Lagoon (30m)

The “Lagoa das Furnas” (Furnas Lagoon), naturally nestled within a caldera (dormant volcano) stands out as a prominent attraction for tourists, hikers, biologists, and bird watchers alike, owing to its diverse array of endemic and invasive flora and fauna species freely roaming this area (non-dangerous).

Being an area so rich in geo thermal activity, here the locals improvised an unique way of taking advantage for cooking an unique Portuguese dish: the “Cozido das Furnas”, a mix of meats, vegetables and tubers that are slowly cooked underground for around 6 hours;

3. Traditional “Cozido das Furnas” – Dinner at local restaurant (1h30m)

As part of the gastronomical experience of this tour we’ll try the aforementioned famous geo-cooked stew at a traditional local restaurant with Starter, Main Dish, Drinks, Dessert and Coffee included in the menu (Vegetarian option available and alternative dishes for children).

Beware! This restaurant is known for its abundant servings, better come hungry!

4. Furnas Hot Spring Baths – “Poça da Dona Beija” (1h30m)

Sip your body and soul into Furnas hot springs pools at “Poça da Dona Beija”, one of the most popular thermal facilities at Furnas, São Miguel.

With natural waters at a temperature of around 39ºC (102ºF), surrounded by a scenario of splendid vegetation and enriched with bird sounds, a moment of relaxation and contemplation that’ll take your mind off the daily routine and worries at the golden hour of the day, between dusk and night.

These rich ferrous waters are known as a great skin care but not suitable for dyed hairs. Skip the line to enter, we take care of booking it for you. Some medical conditions may be incompatible with thermal baths, please consult with your physician before.

5. Curiosities Short Walk – “Alameda” Garden (15m)

Take a short walk through the Alameda Garden: discover an even hotter thermal pool, embrace the environment around the fresh water stream, observe an hidden aquarium and a human-made waterfall.

6. Interpretative Walk – Furnas Iconic Fumaroles and “Caldeiras” (30m)

We’ll finish off our tour admiring the impressive fumaroles and “caldeiras” at the center of the village at night: a smoke and lights show given by nature awaits you, an unique experience in the Azores. We’ll add a bit more of flavour at this stop with tales of old and legends from the area.

Have a taste of the rich mineral waters springs, for taste cleanser we’ll have a local homemade sweet delicacy, a sweet treat from the Azores.

7. Drive-by + Drop-off – Ribeira Grande Municipality (45m)

We’ll drive back through the northern side of the island in a safe and relaxed environment. During this trip, that’ll take around 45 min., you’ll be able to have a nap and/or receive suggestions for other places to visit and what to do for the rest of your stay.

Pickup Instructions

Pickup at your accommodation or meet at a defined meeting point between 17:30-17:45 (5:30pm – 5:45pm), the drop-off will be at the same location between 23:30 – 23:45 (11:30pm – 11:45pm). Please be ready at 17:30 (5:30pm) so we can avoid delays.

Accommodation pickups and drop-off’s at Ponta Delgada and Lagoa are included.

For pickups at accommodations in Ribeira Grande we’ll charge an extra fee of 10€ euros (for booking, NOT for person) at the end of the tour, paid in cash or PayPal. This fee is due to the extra mileage and the added working time to assure we maintain the activities time on schedule. Thank you for your understanding.

If you wish to skip on this fee we can meet at the “Estátua do Emigrante” or “Portas da Cidade” in Ponta Delgada or near the “Continente” supermarket in Lagoa. We’ll define your chosen meeting point when we reach out to you to confirm booking details.
Have in mind that after the thermal baths usually you are more relaxed and sleepy at night.

What are the properties of the thermal baths at Furnas?

The mineral hot springs that flow into these thermal pools are very rich in iron, silica, sodium bicarbonate, sulphur and other minerals. This mineral richness gives us a great natural skin care, amazing relaxation enhancements and stimulates blood circulation.

On the counterpart, being submerged in hot waters for a prolonged amount of time can induce hypotensive and bradycardia effects, thus being not indicated for everybody. People with circulatory problems shouldn’t partake in thermal baths (swelling of legs, varicose veins and related). The thermal facilities don’t recommend it for babies and pregnant women too.

Consult with your physician before when in doubt.

What else should we be cautious about these thermal baths?

Being so rich in certain minerals these waters can stain light colored fabrics in orange.

If you have dyed hair, specially light colors, your hair may change orange or green when submerging it.

Metal jewelry can change colors irreversibly, we recommend removing it before bathing. Gold is not a problem.

These waters flow from a natural source, they don’t undergo any type of treatment or filtration, DO NOT open your eyes inside of it or get large amounts of this water in your mouth.

If you have open wounds refrain from soaking them.

How much can the temperature vary in São Miguel?

The climate at the Azores is classified as an Atlantic Temperate type or sub-tropical in certain locations, defined by its low thermal amplitude (approx. ranges 4ºC – 30ºC [39ºF – 86ºF] throughout the year), high rains, relative humidity in the air and persistent winds.
Between the months of October – April we recommend bringing a layer or two of warmer clothing with waterproof capability.
From May – September we recommend breathable light clothing, the temperatures don’t rise too much in the Azores but our humidity really makes a stand. At night, temperatures can drop greatly depending even during the summer, carry a warm piece of clothing just in case.

What type of clothes should I choose for the tour?

A definitely must are comfortable shoes, those high heels will look good on you for the photos but you’ll probably miss some of the fun walking to more off-track places or be more prone to injuries. Uneven terrain is expected throughout our tours.

Light and breathable clothing for summer, waterproof and warmer for winter. For night time a piece of warmer clothing is enough.
We carry umbrellas if needed.

What to bring for swimming activities?

Please bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and flip-flops.
Careful treading the rocks, especially the shiny and green ones, those can be quite slippery.

Is there in dangerous wildlife in São Miguel?

The wildlife around São Miguel is pretty friendly: you won’t find any snakes, venomous spiders, coyotes, foxes, wolfs, bears or any sort of predatory species.

Usual the problem is at sea with the medusas or when getting too close to some birds nests.

Is walking a big part of the tour?

It can be or not, it all depends on what you’re aiming for. Flexibility is WildScape Azores nickname
